    From the information gathered on the 1876 editions of the A Província de São Paulo newspaper and the manuscript of the leader of the baker movement João de Mattos, this study deals with the threshold of the organization of São Paulo urban workers associations. Besides that, this work investigates what motivated its organization and what it demanded. It also seeks to ascertain whether the defense of the abolition of slavery was part of the demands of the newly organized workers, in general or restricted to those workers who shared the same workplace and living conditions as the enslaved

    A partir das informações recolhidas das edições do jornal A Província de São Paulo, de 1876, e do manuscrito do líder do movimento dos padeiros, João de Mattos, o presente estudo trata do limiar da organização das associações de trabalhadores urbanos paulistas. Portanto, este trabalho investiga o que motivou a criação dessas associações e quais eram as suas demandas.

    Também busca verificar se a defesa da abolição da escravatura fazia parte das reivindicações dos trabalhadores recém-organizados e, em caso afirmativo, se essas reivindicações eram gerais ou se estavam restritas aos trabalhadores que compartilhavam com os escravizados o mesmo local de trabalho e as mesmas condições de vida
