    This article aims to reflect on the search for a Latin American identity for the art on the continent, a debate that was established in the theoretical field, especially between the 1960s and 1970s.To this end, it will analyze how the relations between the central and peripheral poles in the international art system occur and the role played by art history in this process. As well, we will seek to reflect on the positions of Latin American art critics and historians on the need for identity for Latin American art. Will also be contemplated in the text the possible paths for the construction of a new theoretical frameworks for the analysis of the artistic object produced on the continent, as well as a new historiography of Latin art and its scope in the international scenario.

    O presente artigo tem como objetivo refletir sobre a busca de uma identidade latino- americana para a arte do continente, debate que se estabeleceu no campo teórico, especialmente, entre as décadas de 1960 e 1970. Para tanto, será analisado como se dão as relações estabelecidas entre os polos centrais e periféricos no sistema de arte internacional e o papel desempenhado pela história da arte nesse processo. Assim como, buscaremos refletir sobre os posicionamentos de críticos e historiadores da arte latino-americanos sobre a necessidade de diferenciação identitária para a arte do continente. Os possíveis caminhos para a construção de novos marcos teóricos para a análise do objeto artístico produzidos na América Latina, bem como de uma nova historiografia da arte e seu alcance no cenário internacional também serão contemplados no texto.
