  • Resumen
    • During the Uppermost Tortonian, a tectonically controlled delta system composed by five sequences, developed lying against the southern margin of the Cuadix Basin (Central Betic Cordillera, Spain). The three older sequences (I, II and III), developed under extensional tectonic conditions, show a retrogradational and agradational architecture and they are made up by Gilbert and Shelf-type deltas. The two younger sequences (IV and V) developed during a compressive tectonic stage. Sequence IV is built up by large Gilbert-type fan deltas showing a stacking pattern and sequence V is composed by small delta lobes prograding over the basin marls of the underlying sequences. Sequence V records the end of marine sedimentation in the area, just before the Atlantic- Mediterranean connection trough Almanzora Corridor was closed. This last delta sequence is thought to be a forced-regressive system.
