Guillain-Barré syndrome: Possible complication of the flu vaccine?

    Objetivos: El objetivo del presente artículo es establecer un protocolo de investigación para determinar si existe asociación entre la vacuna antigripal y el Síndrome de Guillain-Barré (SGB).

    Métodos: Se llevará a cabo un estudio de casos y controles para determinar si existe relación o no entre la vacuna antigripal y el SGB. Por cada caso de SGB se seleccionará un control del mismo sexo y de edad similar, y se determinará si han estado expuestos a la vacuna antigripal, con objeto de poder determinar si dicha vacuna incrementa el riesgo de padecer SGB.

    Resultados: Se espera que la vacuna antigripal no se asocie a un riesgo incrementado de padecer SGB. Tal resultado sería de gran importancia para los pacientes y el sistema sanitario. Se contribuiría decisivamente a tranquilizar a la población general, en especial a los grupos de riesgo que pueden beneficiarse de la vacunación antigripal, pudiendo informarles de su seguridad.

    Conclusiones: Se recomienda llevar a cabo este protocolo en diferentes centros sanitarios para obtener conclusiones fiables acerca de la posible asociación entre vacuna antigripal y SGB.

    Objectives: The objective of this article is to establish a research protocol to determine if there is an association between the flu vaccine and Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS).

    Methods: A case-control study will be carried out to determine whether or not there is a relationship between the flu vaccine and the GBS. For each case of GBS a control of the same sex and of similar age will be selected, and it will be determined if they have been exposed to the flu vaccine, in order to determine whether this vaccine increases the risk of suffering from GBS.

    Findings: The flu vaccine is not expected to be associated with an increased risk of GBS. Such a result would be of great importance for the patients and for the healthcare system. It would contribute decisively to reassure the general population, especially the risk groups that can benefit from flu vaccine, being able to inform them of its safety.

    Conclusions: It is recommended to carry out this protocol in different health centers to obtain reliable conclusions about the possible association between flu vaccine and GBS.
