    It is often thought that in André Chénier’s œuvre the denunciation of barbarity features essentially in the poems (odes and iambs) written when in prison. Taking into account the works written prior to incarceration (the first three years of the Revolution and the previous ten years) sheds light, however, on the way barbarity was a recurring, haunting presence, which can be found in the press articles and in the poems of the earlier years of the Revolution that extend to the vast historical panoramas of the epic sketches (“Hermès”, “Amérique” and “Invention”) and on to the denunciations of aristocratic arrogance in his epigrams, and even to the “Bucoliques” which cannot be simply reduced to their pastoral and antiquarian dimensions

    L’on considère généralement que, dans l’œuvre d’André Chénier, la dénonciation de la barbarie se concentre dans les poèmes – odes et iambes – écrits en prison. Cependant la lecture des œuvres antérieures à l’incarcération – les trois premières années de la Révolution et la décennie précédente – permet de comprendre comment la barbarie fut une hantise récurrente : des articles de presse et des poèmes des débuts de la Révolution aux vastes panoramas historiques des ébauches d’épopées (Hermès, l’Amérique et l’Invention) aux dénonciations de l’arrogance aristocratique des épigrammes et même aux Bucoliques qui ne peuvent être réduits à leur dimension antiquisante et pastorale
