As class sizes rise, semesterization increases and time available for teaching decreases, it becomes more imperative that assessment becomes even more effective and efficient. This paper describes how the author makes use of an essay ranking exercise to reduce time spent on marking; to give students fast feedback; to show students what is expected of them when writing an ‘essay'; and to give students a prediction of their future performance. This paper also shows the students’ positive response to the ranking exercise and points to future developments.
