What prospects are there in sub‐Saharan Africa for distance education over the next five years? This paper analyses the political, economic and social forces that have affected the sub‐region over the past twenty‐five years in order to understand how they have determined the shape of distance and formal education in the present. The role of external agencies in the development of distance education is also examined.
