    The nineteenth century was a period of intense changes in brazilian society.

    Among these changes is the redevelopment of Rio de Janeiro characterized by a remodeling project of the urban spaces and by changes in the behaviors of individuals. In this context, a new way of life emerged in Rio's city society and influenced the women’s social relations and habits, who until then shared trajectories characterized by the control and guardianship by their fathers and husbands. Man from that time and an attentive observer, José de Alencar express these changes in his works. Although Alencar’s novels mobilized and established the social places of men and women. In these texts the presence of some words challenge the model of a docile and honorable woman. By identifying this, we will demonstrate how Alencar’s female characters, despite being written in prescriptive novels that sought to imprison women in the existing structure of social domination, were manipulated to resignify their experiences and manifest their insubordination.

    O século XIX foi um período de intensas mudanças na sociedade brasileira e, dentre elas, destaca-se a reurbanização do Rio de Janeiro, que foi marcada por um projeto de remodelação dos espaços urbanos e por mudanças nos comportamentos dos indivíduos. Nesse contexto, um novo estilo de vida surgiu na sociedade citadina carioca e influenciava as relações sociais e hábitos referentes às vidas das mulheres, que até então compartilhavam trajetórias caracterizadas pelo controle e tutela do pai e do marido. Homem desse tempo e observador atento, José de Alencar não deixou de expressar essas transformações em suas obras. Ainda que os romances alencarianos mobilizassem e estabelecessem os lugares sociais de homens e mulheres, nesses textos a presença insurgente de algumas palavras contesta o modelo de mulher dócil e honrada. Por meio da identificação dessas insurgências, buscaremos demonstrar como as personagens femininas alencarianas, apesar de escritas em romances prescritivos que buscavam aprisionar as mulheres na estrutura de dominação social já existente, foram manipuladas de modo a ressignificar suas vivências e manifestar suas insubordinações
