    The first Jesuit mission sent to the Kingdom of Kongo did not last for a long time:

    the missionaries arrived in 1548, and they were expelled from West Central Africa in 1555.

    Throughout a comparative approach regarding the Jesuits in Brazil, my hypothesis is that the particularity of the mission in Kongo should be explained through the change that occurred in the Jesuit’s judgment about the manikongo D. Diogo. He was first considered positively as a good king, being later characterized as an absolute tyrant. Considering the missionaries’ interests in the slave trade, the aim of this article is to verify the malleability, or not, of the Occidental categories engaged by the Jesuits in the recognition of the Kingdom of Kongo

    A primeira missão jesuítica enviada ao reino do Congo durou pouco tempo:

    chegados em 1548, os missionários foram expulsos daquela vinha em 1555. A partir de um olhar comparativo com relação à presença dos jesuítas no Brasil, aventamos a hipótese de que a particularidade da missão no Congo deve ser entendida por uma mudança do julgamento que os inacianos endereçaram ao manicongo D. Diogo: primeiro reconhecido positivamente, depois configurado como um tirano absoluto. Tendo em vista os interesses escravistas por parte dos missionários, o objetivo do presente artigo é verificar a plasticidade, ou não, das categorias ocidentais empenhadas no reconhecimento do reino centro-africano.
