This paper describes three examples of learning environments that have been created for the Web to enable task‐oriented learning. The environments described in this paper allow students to develop and apply their skills and knowledge in a simulated environment. Three different environments are described; each taken from a different discipline. They are supported by the technical infrastructure provided by the Clyde Virtual University which is an initiative sponsored by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council and has served universities in the West of Scotland since 1995.
