The author presents several major coordinates of the Romanian language relative to the European multilingualism and multiculturalism. Romanian belongs to the family of Romance languages holding at the same time correspondence features with the neighbouring languages. Its Romance identity is genealogical, typological and spatial. An infallible witness of the Latin origin of Romanian is represented by the glossonym itself (ethonym) which comes from the defining word romana (romanus) and from its synonym, used by foreigners, valah (Valahia); the individuality of Romanian in the Romance and regional context is an unmistakable brand and makes it a linguistic bridge between languages that it has been in contact with; this role as well as its Romance fidelity, its remarkable territorial unity and continuity of development directions are the safest and active timing advantages of the Romanian language with the other languages of Europe, first of all modernizing its structures in the European spirit. Latinity, individuality, unity, permissiveness, force assimilation, hospitality are some of the solid peculiarities of the Romanian language, which, on the one hand, preserved it as a special European idiom, and, on the other hand, motivated and boosted its European affinity in different historical contexts. These factors and others, found in interdependence with the ones mentioned and analyzed in the article, also favour the process of nowadays European integration process.
