    This paper deals with the art of the clown in the history of Brazilian theater, its absences and its intersections with the circus and the theater. After a brief overview on the performance of clowns in Brazilian lands, since colonial times, the main aspects and influences in the formation of the Brazilian clown are analyzed. Throughout the text is developed the idea that the clownery is an autonomous artistic expression and deserves it’s own history.

    Este artigo trata da arte do palhaço na história do teatro brasileiro, suas ausências e suas interseções com o circo e o teatro. A partir de um breve panorama da atuação dos palhaços em terras brasileiras, desde os tempos coloniais, são analisados os principais aspectos e influências na formação do palhaço brasileiro. Ao longo do texto é desenvolvida a ideia de que a palhaçaria é uma expressão artística autônoma e merecedora de uma história própria
