  During the 19th century the institution of the civil marriage started being discussed in the country, approaching the demands of the Brazilian society that had been changing due to the arrival of non-Catholic immigrants and also because of its modernization. In the meantime, if the ideals of secularization and freedom of belief conquered numerous adepts among politicians and intellectuals, the Ultramontanism found in Brazil a “fertile soil” to propagate their ideas and defend the privileged place that Catholicism had as the official religion of the Empire since the Constitution of 1824. The present paper aims to analyze the speeches in the Ultramontane Catholic press against civil marriage, elucidating the tensions and clashes among politicians and religious representatives campaigning for the sacredness of marriage.

  Durante o século XIX a instituição do casamento civil passou a ser discutida no país, acompanhando as demandas da sociedade brasileira que ingressava em um período de grandes mudanças, tanto pela entrada de imigrantes não católicos quanto por sua modernização. Entretanto, se os ideais de secularização e liberdade de crença conquistavam inúmeros adeptos entre políticos e intelectuais, o ultramontanismo encontrou no Brasil um solo fecundo para difundir suas ideias e defender o lugar privilegiado que o catolicismo ocupava como religião oficial do Império desde a Constituição de 1824. O presente artigo pretende analisar os discursos feitos na imprensa católica ultramontana contra o casamento civil, elucidando as tensões e embates entre atores políticos e religiosos na campanha em torno da sacralidade do matrimônio.
