    This paper aims to conduct a historiographical survey regarding the research on indigenous identity and history. The concept of identity started to be used in the nineteenth century and nowadays it has been used in researches considering the transformation process in Indian history, or in native history. Another concept which is very present in this debate is the ethnicity contribution in the recreation of indigenous identity. In the article we intend to examine the concepts and theories, as well as their uses by authors who prioritize indigenous and/or native history as a source of data. In this way we aim to expand and rethink the studies on the early inhabitants of America

    O presente artigo tem como objetivo realizar um panorama historiográfico no que diz respeito aos trabalhos sobre identidade e história indígena. O conceito identidade começou a ser utilizado no século XIX, e hoje vem sendo empregado em pesquisas sobre a transformação indígena no processo histórico, ou em uma história nativa. Outro conceito muito presente nesse debate é a etnicidade, que contribuiu na recriação da identidade indígena. No artigo pretendemos examinar os conceitos e teorias, bem como as utilizações dos mesmos por autores que priorizam a história indígena e/ou nativa como fonte de trabalho.

    Desta forma almejamos ampliar e repensar os estudos sobre os primeiros habitantes da América
