  A lo largo del siglo XVIII se generaliza el debate entre lactancia materna y mercenaria. La figura de la nodriza pasa a ser cuestionada por la ciencia médica. Los descubrimientos fisiológicos acerca del cuerpo de la mujer se fijan exclusivamente en su función reproductora. Así el discurso ilustrado establece la identidad entre mujer y maternidad como un hecho biológico y como una construcción social para redefinir el papel de la madre, imprescindible en los primeros años de vida de los hijos, y su misión de amamantarlos, criarlos y educarlos. Los tratados de puericultura, tanto los de autoría española como las traducciones extranjeras, persiguen enseñar a las madres todo lo relacionado con el cuidado y la salud de los hijos, para dar al Estado ciudadanos robustos, y contribuir a paliar el déficit demográfico. Asimismo, estos tratados presentan a la nodriza como la antagonista de la madre nutricia, ya que puede destruir al niño con su leche y sus malos hábitos.

  Throughout the eighteenth century the debate between mother breastfeeding and mercenary breastfe-eding is spread. The figure of the nurse happens to be questioned by the medical science. The physio-logical discoveries about the female body are fixed in their reproductive function exclusively. So, the illustrated discourse establishes the identity between women and motherhood as a biological fact and as a social construction to redefine the role of the mother, indispensable in the first years of life of children and their mission to breastfeed, raise and educate them. Childcare treaties, so the Spanish authorship as foreign translations pursue teaching mothers everything related to the care and health of the children, to give the state sturdy citizens and help alleviate the demographic deficit. Also, these treaties have the nurse as a nurturing mother antagonist because it can destroy the child with her milk and bad habits
