Um político do Império que lia escritos whigs: Nabuco de Araújo e as obras oitocentistas de Thomas Macaula

    The works of the historian, speaker, essayist and English whig politician Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) occupied na important place in the library of the Brazilian Empire politician Thomás Nabuco de Araújo (1813-1878). Both called themselves liberals:

    Macaulay has always defined himself like that, and Nabuco since 1860. Both Macaulay and Nabuco had to stand on the issue of slavery and workers rights and defended the political and social reforms without revolution. Above all, by comparing the general characteristics of form and content of both writings, this brief article aims to analyze to what extent the style and concepts of Macaulay were useful for reflection and political action of Nabuco de Araújo. From an attempt to make the Empire intellectual history, we intend to discuss the political ideas dynamics, which can transformed and appropriated in other times and places, inspiring so, new political cultures

    As obras do historiador, orador, ensaísta e político whig inglês Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) ocupavam um importante espaço na biblioteca do político do Império Brasileiro Thomás Nabuco de Araújo (1813-1878). Ambos denominavam-se liberais: Macaulay desde sempre e Nabuco assim se definia a partir de 1860. Tanto Macaulay como Nabuco tiveram que se posicionar sobre a questão da escravidão, sobre os direitos dos trabalhadores e defenderam as reformas políticas e sociais sem a revolução. Sobretudo, através da comparação entre traços gerais do conteúdo e da forma na escrita de ambos, este breve artigo pretende analisar em que medida o estilo e os conceitos de Macaulay foram úteis para a reflexão e atuação política de Nabuco de Araújo. A partir de uma tentativa de fazer a história intelectual do Império, pretendese discutir a dinâmica das ideias políticas, que podem ser transformadas e apropriadas em outros tempos e lugares inspirando, assim, novas culturas políticas.
