In the "Emblèmes Chrétiens", the first of their kind, which were published in Lyons in 1571, the encounter of picture and text is that of mannerist, rather carnal art, with Protestant spirituality. Pierre Woeriot's cupperplates translate Georgette de Montenay's theological and moral epigrams as « litterally » as possible. They endeavour to represent concepts only, sometimes with contorted results.
