    Este artículo intenta relacionar la etnicidad con el cambio cultural, sobre la base de un análisis de los Yanaconas del Departamento de Cauca y su movimiento étnico. Sugiere que las identidades étnicas no son necesariamente identidades culturales, sino básicamente identidades sociopolíticas; el componente cultural de la etnia es la incorporación de lo cultural por la vía de lo político. A pesar de su naturaleza, los efectos de la etnia no son exclusivamente políticos; afectan a la cultura al provocar cambios culturales y simbólicos, creando y renovando el significado. El estudio tiene tres secciones principales: la primera presenta los fundamentos conceptuales de la investigación; la segunda, los datos etnográficos básicos sobre las Yanaconas del Macizo colombiano; y la tercera, una aproximación antropológica al movimiento Yanacona.

    This article attempts to relate ethnicity to cultural change, on the basis of an analysis of the Yanaconas of the Department of Cauca and their ethnic movement. It suggests that ethnic identities are not necessarily cultural identities, but basically sociopolitical identities; the cultural component of ethnicity is the incorporation of the cultural by way of the political. Despite their nature, the effects of ethnicity are not exclusively political; they affect culture by bringing about cultural and symbolic changes, creating and renewing meaning. The study has three main sections: the first presents the conceptual foundations for the research; the second basic ethnographic data on the Yanaconas of the Colombian Macizo; and the third, an anthropological approach to the Yanacona movement.
