    This short piece concerns the relationship between language and power, observed here according to the teachings of Tullio De Mauro, a distinguished linguist who died in 2017. The central theme is therefore linguistic democracy, its meaning, and the subsequent experience of the Italian constituents after the Second World War. The 1947 Constitution, in fact, is a “gentle” Constitution, because it uses welcoming words, and is able to be understood by all and withstands the test of time. This twofold quality, in turn, is derived from the generality of the language adopted by the founders, but was then betrayed by the language of the law.

    Questo breve scritto concerne i rapporti fra lingua e potere, qui osservati a partire dalla lezione di Tullio De Mauro, insigne linguista scomparso nel 2017. Il tema centrale è dunque la democrazia linguistica, il suo significato, l’esperienza che ne realizzarono i costituenti italiani nel secondo dopoguerra. La Carta del 1947, infatti, è una Costituzione «gentile», perché usa parole accoglienti, in grado di farsi comprendere da tutti e di resistere all’usura del tempo. Questa doppia qualità, a sua volta, deriva dalla generalità del linguaggio adottato dai costituenti, ma è stata poi tradita dal linguaggio delle leggi.
