Il contributo tratta di un disegno della collezione Lanciani che rappresenta gli scavi del 1871–1872 di una tomba nella Vigna Casali. Durante le indagini di questa tomba è venuta alla luce una ricca collezione di antichità, tra cui importanti sarcofagi ora al J. Paul Getty Museum, al Nelson-Atkins Museum e alla Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek. Il disegno, che è stato erroneamente catalogato come raffigurante la Vigna Casati, non è stato finora collegato a questi ritrovamenti. Fu realizzato sul posto da Francesco Patrizi (1826–1905), un sostenitore della pittura contemporanea, artista dilettante e proprietario della non lontana Villa Patrizi. Questo articolo mette in relazione le informazioni contenute nel disegno con le descrizioni contemporanee degli scavi e un disegno misurato realizzato per la famiglia Casali al momento della scoperta per capire meglio cosa contenesse il sito.

This paper discusses a drawing in the Lanciani collection representing the excavations of a tomb at the Vigna Casali in 1871–2. This tomb had a rich collection of antiquities, including important sarcophagi now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek. The drawing, which is wrongly catalogued as depicting the Vigna Casati, has not hitherto been connected with these finds. It was made on site by Francesco Patrizi (1826–1905), a supporter of contemporary painting, amateur artist, and owner of the Villa Patrizi not far away. This article correlates the information contained in the drawing with contemporary descriptions of the excavations and a measured drawing made for the Casali family at the time, in order to understand better what the site contained.
