The major morphotectonic features in the foreland of the Eastern Betics can be explained within the frame of the weak compressive stress field originated in the Prebetic fold and thrust belt. This NW directed compression is partitioned by N130°-150° dextral strike-slip corridors and orthogonal crustal flexures. The Neogene-Quaternary volcanism and the distribution of seismicity can be also considered within this compressive neotectonic regime.
