  • Most of autors admit two hypothesis as a base for kinematic reconstructions: 1) continental stretching hypothesis for the origin of crustal thinning, 2) no existence of Paleozoic inherited basins. Assuming the first hypothesis we have explored the differents possible ways to restore the North Atlantic pre-rift stages (Pyrenean Domain is included). Two solutions (with and without inherited spaces) are possible but none of these resolve completely the problem. We conclude that: a) the unique continental stretching hypothesis fails at obtaining a satisfactory global solution, b) knowledge of the peri-iberian deep basins and a restoration of the Triassic and final Paleozoïc kinematics (that we only have been to call for here) is mandatory for the interpretation of the Pyrenean Domain distensive phases and c) a kinematic reconstruction of North Atlantic Ocean has to take into account the Artic evolution.
