    La reciente firma entre Turquía y el Gobierno de Acuerdo Nacional libio de dos acuerdos sobre la delimitación de sus respectivas zonas económicas exclusivas y sobre cooperación militar y de seguridad ha provocado sorpresa y reacciones adversas no solo entre los países de su entorno mediterráneo, sino en el espacio europeo, en general, obligando, incluso, a una toma de postura por las grandes potencias.

    Los intereses de Turquía en Libia son diversos, pero el verdadero motor de estos acuerdos ha sido la disputa por la delimitación de las aguas en el Mediterráneo oriental con la explotación de los potenciales recursos energéticos que contiene. La firma de los acuerdos supone un cambio de la estrategia turca en la zona, con profundas implicaciones geopolíticas.

    The Memoranda of Understanding recently signed by Turkey and the Libyan Government of National Accord on delimitation of the maritime jurisdiction areas in the Mediterranean and security and military cooperation have been the cause of both surprise and aversion not only amongst the surrounding Mediterranean countries, but also amidst Europe in general. This has in turn forced the great powers to adopt positions about said deal.

    Although Turkey has various interests in Libya, the driving force behind these agreements has been the dispute about the delimitation of the waters in the Eastern Mediterranean and the exploitation of the potential energetic resources it contains. The signing of the MoU entails a change in the Turkish strategy in the zone, which would result in profound geopolitical implications.
