  • Resumen
    • Exhibited in the Louvre is a large painting representing Les Mystères de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament (The Mysteries of the Old and o f the New Testaments) by the painter from Liege, Bertholet Flémal. The discovery of an unpublished manuscript in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France throws a radically new light on this little-known work by lifting the veil from its sponsor and the circumstances of the commission and is now the basis for the interpretation of its unusual iconography. Around 1675, the friar Jérôme du Saint Sacrement, monk in the convent of the Grands Augustins in Paris, had a painting executed for Louis XIV in order to convince the sovereign to promote the cult of the Holy Sacrament. This gift was part of an ambitious project to make use of the arts in order to create a new royal image making Louis XIV, in the years proceeding the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the defender of the Holy Sacrament and of the Catholic faith. The Augustinian monk in particular called upon two major engravers who worked for the King. François Chauveau undertook the engraving of the painting and Sebastien Leclerc's manuscript contains unpublished drawings for a "voeu de Louis XIV" (vow of Louis XIV), a collar for a new chevaleresque order and a royal medal, which come together to express the contribution of the French monarchy to the celebration of the Holy Sacrament
