El futuro de Siria se juega en Idlib

    Rusia y Turquía sellaron el 5 de marzo pasado un acuerdo de alto el fuego que hasta la fecha ha interrumpido la ofensiva iniciada a mediados del pasado año por la Fuerzas Armadas sirias para recuperar el enclave de Idlib, provincia al noroeste del país en manos de fuerzas de la oposición. La situación sobre el terreno es compleja y la tensión existente podría hacer saltar por los aires el acuerdo en cualquier momento. Aunque no suficiente, este cese de hostilidades es condición necesaria para la reanudación del proceso de paz al amparo de la Resolución 2254 del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU.

    The signing of the ceasefire agreement on March 5th between Russia and Turkey has brought a halt to the offensive initiated mid 2019 by the Syrian Armed Forces where they attempted to retrieve the Northeastern province of Idlib from the opposition forces. Due to the complexity of the situation on the ground and the existing tension, the agreement could be completely shattered on any given moment. Though not sufficient, this cessation of hostilities is a necessary condition for the resumption of the peace process under the 2254 UN Security Council Resolution.
