Los libros de viajes son muy característicos de la literatura de finales de la Baja Edad Media y en todo el periodo de la transición (siglos XVI-XVIII), estableciendo importantes relaciones e interpretaciones de los cambios que se estaban produciendo en el seno de la sociedad medieval y moderna. No son reflejo de estos cambios, sino que forman parte de los mismos. El prototipo sin duda es el Libro de las Maravillas de Marco Polo, pero hubo otros que también fueron abriendo paso al Humanismo y a las corrientes sensistas, que planteaban otra manera de ver, sentir y vivir. Se trata, en última instancia, de un proceso inscrito en la historia de la configuración de la individualidad y del sujeto moderno.

Travel books are very characteristic of the literature of the Late Middle Ages and the transition period (16th-18th Centuries), establishing important relationships and interpretations of the changes taking place within medieval and modern society. They are not a reflection of these changes, but a part thereof. The prototype is undoubtedly the Book of the Marvels of the World by Marco Polo, but there were others also making their way to Humanism and the sensist currents. They offered another way to see, feel, and live. It is, actually, a process inscribed in the history of the configuration of individuality and the modern subject.
