The microstructure of triaxial whiteware bodies is described and an outline is given of the main factors which act upon its formation. Samples of a porcelain batch of very simple composition have been heated to temperatures from LOOO^'C to LSOO^'C. The chemical and microstructural transformations which take place during firing have been followed by X-ray diffraction analysis and by electron microscopy. The growth of two families of mullite crystals is evident from the photomicrographs obtained.
