  • Resumen
    • Innovation for journalism has become an increasing matter of survival in the new digital media landscape. However, we still face a lack of a shared understanding of media innovation within academia combined with an inability to clearly define what is innovation related to the news industry. This paper contributes to the necessity of better defining journalism innovation by analyzing seventeen highlighted projects on Google DNI Fund 2018 Report initiative. We propose a framework of five variables: implementation stage; innovation mindset; innovation focus/innovation target; proven journalist outcomes; and potential replicability degree. The conclusions show that news media innovators are searching for ecosystem solutions rather than worry about solutions for themselves. News business models and news narratives or formats are strongly connected, which means that media might finally understand that they should work for real users and not for imagined ones.
