    A pesar del significativo aumento de los estudios dedicados al área de la geriatría y gerontología, se considera que el maltrato en la vejez no ha obtenido el protagonismo e importancia que este supone para una sociedad cada vez más envejecida y dependiente.

    Por este motivo, se plantea una revisión bibliográfica sobre el maltrato en la vejez, en la que se pretende explicar en qué consiste el maltrato, los diferentes tipos y factores que influyen en el mismo, las consecuencias del maltrato, así como el análisis de los beneficios que supone poseer conocimientos y habilidades respecto a este tema para los profesionales sanitarios.

    Se exponen los diferentes ámbitos donde la situación de maltrato se produce, tanto el hogar como el sociosanitario, además de analizar otros factores clave como el papel que ocupan los maltratadores dentro del entorno del anciano.

    Para concluir, se ofrecen una serie de recomendaciones sobre la detección precoz del maltrato en el anciano y medidas de actuación por parte de los profesionales sanitarios, incluyendo aspectos legales.

    Nowadays, the number of researches in the field of geriatric and gerontology is significant. Despite of that, it is believed that elder abuse hasn’t gained the prominence and importance as one might expect in a society more and more aged and dependent.

    Therefore, a literature review of elder abuse was conducted, in which it is explained what elder abuse is, besides different kinds of abuse; what factors are associated with it , and its consequences. Furthermore, to analyze the benefits of having knowledge and skills in management of this subject provide health professional .

    It is exposed different areas where there is mistreatment. It happens both at home and the health sector. As well as it is discussed other key factors such as the role that the abusers have within the environment for elderly.

    To conclude, it is offered some recommendations about how to detect elder abuse as soon as possible and actions points provided by health professionals including legal aspects.
