Here we analyse the stability of rock masses for wedge failure when the intersecting planes have different dips and the upper part of the slope has a vertical tension crack and the lower part resolves into the wedge arist dipping a degrees. We develop a new method to determine the minimumsafety factor as a function of depth of the tension crack and the dip of the wedge. An example illustrates the relevance of this method that improves Hoek and Bray's procedure.
