Rock mass characterization is required for many applications in rock engineering practice including excavation design, support design, amongst others. Over the years, many classification systems, such as RMR, Q, CSI systems, have been developed. In the present study, an engineering approach for the use of the GSI is presented. This approach is based in the graphic classification procedure of rock masses in alpine regions, established by Morales et al. (2004) for the Basque Arc (Basque-Cantabrian basin, Northern Spain) following the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. We have studied heterogeneous rock masses (flysch) in the Astigarraga region (Guipúzcoa), using the information obtained from borehole, refraction seismic profiles and metering stations. This information is supplemented with laboratory measurements, and by obtaining the RQD, RMR and GSI indices.
