The Patzcuaro lake is located in the Mexican State of Michoacan. The Jaracuaro island Is formed by Holocene lake sediments highly deformed by active faults. Four trenches were made in active faults, two of them close to two basaltic blocks located over faults with surface rupture. The Purepecha Civilization suffered those earthquakes and put the blocks over the faults. This archaeological evidence implies that the age of the events is the Pre - Classic period (3.000 years B.P). Maybe this is one of the oldest human manifestation towards seismic phenomena, and the first time in which a seismic movement is connected a fault.
