A series of sand-silicone models was performed in order to analyse the role of an along-strike pretectonic overburden-tapering with 3n underlying detachment level on the architecture and dynamics of fold-and-thrust belts. Our experimental results indicate that the deformational pattern ot accretionary wedges can vary substantially when a pre-tectonic sedimentary geometry is underlain by a ductile layer. Escape structures, ductile flow and rotation of the overburden are the principal consequences of an along-strike pre-tectonic sedimentary tapering overlying a detachment level.
