Resumen de El papel de la inversion tectónica en la estructura de la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes del norte de Argentina

N. Carrera, Josep Anton Muñoz i de la Fuente, Ricardo Mon, Eduard Roca, A. Vega, Francesc Sàbat i Montserrat

  • This paper ¡s aimed to evaluate the role played by the inversion tectonics in the Cordillera Oriental of NW Argentinean Andes. In this area Andean structures involve the Precambrian basement and the Cretaceous series showing strong facies and thickness changes. N-S trending thrusts of the Cordillera Oriental truncate obliquely the Cretaceous extensional faults. Analysis o f the observed faults and their relationships with the Cretaceous synrift sequences demonstrate a NW-SE trending orientation for the main extensional faults as well as a subordinated NE-SW system. This orientation fits with the general structural trend inferred from the isopach map of the synrift sequences. As a result of the obliquity between the extensional and contractional faults, inversion geometries are only locally significative. They control the development of thrust re-entrants and salients at different scales. Along these oblique structures inversion geometries are observed such as reactivated faults, basement short-cuts and related folds. These folds show interference patterns with the general N-S trending o f the contractional structures.
