El artículo trata, tomando algunos ejemplos representativos, sobre el empleo de la grafia x en la escritura de la toponimia andina asignable a las lenguas mayores del antiguo Perú (quechua, aimara y puquina) tal como aparece en la documentación colonial (siglos XVI y XVII). Una vez identificada la naturaleza fónica de dicha grafía, y de su reflejo actual representado por j, se procede con la interpretación semántica de los nombres en los que aparece, proponiendo a la vez la filiación etimológica de ellos. De este modo, a través de la "biografía" de los topónimos estudiados, es posible descubrir las diferentes remodelaciones por las que han pasado tales nombres, lo que a su tumo nos informa acerca de las lenguas y de los pueblos que los acuftaron

The article deals, on the basis of the treatment of sorne representative examples, about the use of letter x in the writing of Andean place names related to the major languages of ancient Peru (Quechua, Aymara and Puquina), as it appears in the colonial documentation (XVI-XVII centuries). Once identified the phonetic content and nature ofthe mentioned grapheme, and that of its modem retlex written as j it proceeds with the semantic interpretation of the names in which it is used, postulating at the same time their etymological affiliation . In this way, through the "biography" ofthe toponyms examined, it is possible to discover the different remodelations which suffered them, and which, on its tum, informs us about the languages and the populations that coined them .
