Resumen de Sobre el desarrollo deportivo del juego del palo en Canarias

  Este trabajo surge de una revisión preliminar de prensa histórica dentro de un proyecto general de registro patrimonial de los juegos y deportes tradicionales de las islas Canarias, previsto por el Aula de Juegos y Deportes Tradicionales de la Universidad de La Laguna, y que se había iniciado con el juego del palo.

  Su objeto concreto es delimitar la presencia histórica y el significado social de esta práctica tradicional, y poner a prueba la idoneidad del proceso de integración administrativa que aquella ha sufrido, así como la de las derivadas académicas vinculadas al mismo.

  En primer lugar se hace un seguimiento del tratamiento legislativo, administrativo y académico dado desde la instauración del Gobierno de Canarias, para ponerlo luego en contraste con la fuente escrita disponible con los siguientes parámetros: 1) menciones o capítulos en textos históricos o antropológicos publicados, de carácter específico o no; 2) ídem con relación expresa a prensa nacional, que ha resultado ser con respecto al tema básicamente local y no anterior a finales del s. XIX.

  A modo de conclusión, constatamos una notable contradicción entre dicho tratamiento y el proceso previo a éste mostrado por las fuentes, siendo evidente que la actividad manifestó desde 1900 un desarrollo netamente pro deportivo, en general muy cercano al de la Lucha Canaria aunque sin el apoyo oficial que tuvo aquella después de la Guerra Civil; pareciéndonos también patente y preocupante, desde el punto de vista patrimonial, la irregularidad del tratamiento oficial en la última década del siglo XX.

  This work arises from a preliminary review of the historical press within a general project of heritage registration of the traditional games and sports of the Canary Islands, planned by the Group of Study of Traditional Games and Sports in the University of La Laguna, and which had been started with the “juego del palo or “stick-play” Its specific purpose is to delimit the historical presence and social significance of this traditional practice, and to test the suitability of the administrative integration process that it has been undergone, as well as that of the academic derivatives linked to it.

  In the first place, a follow-up of the legislative, administrative and academic treatment that has been given since the establishment of the Canary Islands Government is carried out, to then contrast it with the available written source with the following parameters: 1) mentions or chapters in historical texts or published anthropological, specific or not; 2) idem in relation to the national press, which has turned out to be with respect to the basically local issue and not prior to the end of the s. XIX.

  In conclusion, we find a notable contradiction between said treatment and the process prior to it shown by the sources, and it is evident that the activity showed a clearly pro-sports development since 1900, in general very close to that of the Canarian Wrestling, although without the same official support that she has after the Civil War. The irregularity of the official treatment in the last decade of the 20th century also seems patent and worrying, from the patrimonial point of view.
