    La imponente flota que Felipe II envió a Inglaterra para unirse con el ejército de Flandes con el objetivo de invadir la isla, avistó la costa sur de Gran Bretaña el 29 de julio de 1588. Pese a que no se produjeron combates definitivos en el canal de la Mancha, la Marina Real inglesa consiguió posicionarse de manera favorable para impedir que los barcos españoles se aproximaran a la costa. Una vez superada la latitud de Calais y con el viento soplando hacia el norte, la Armada y los Tercios de Farnesio no podrían hallar un punto de encuentro. Medina Sidonia ordenó el retorno a la península ibérica bordeando las islas británicas. Los barcos menos adaptados a la navegación en el Atlántico y los que habían resultado más seriamente dañados en el Canal comenzaron a quedarse rezagados. Una sucesión de violentas tormentas sorprendió a los barcos que formaban la retaguardia de la armada, provocando destrozos que hundieron muchos navíos. Las tripulaciones lucharon por sobrevivir al hambre, al frío y a las guarniciones inglesas destacadas en la costa oeste de Irlanda. Algunos lo consiguieron, otros no.

    The imposing fleet that Philip II sent to England to join with the army of Flanders with the aim of invading the island, sighted the southern coast of Great Britain on July 29, 1588. Although there were no definite combats in the Channel of La Mancha, the Royal Navy managed to position itself favorably to prevent Spanish ships from approaching the coast. Once the latitude of Calais has been overcome and the wind was blowing to the north, the Armada and the Tercios of Farnesio could not find a meeting point. Medina Sidonia ordered the return to the Iberian Peninsula bordering the British Isles.

    The boats less adapted to the navigation in the Atlantic and those that had been more seriously damaged in the Canal, began to fall behind. A succession of violent storms surprised the ships that formed the rear of the Armada causing destruction that sank many ships. The crews fought to survive the hunger, the cold and the English garrisons on the west coast of Ireland. Some got it, others did not.
