  ¿Son equivalentes el ocio, la ociosidad y la recreación? El presente artículo intenta responder a dichainterrogante con el objetivo de que América Latina participe más activamente en la discusión global e incidacon toda la riqueza de su capital humano y acervo cultural en la configuración del ocio como experienciapersonal y fenómeno social. El ocio, como concepto, ha variado significativamente en diferentes períodoshistóricos, pero la adquirida y prolongada confusión de términos entre ocio, ociosidad y recreación haimpedido el tratamiento adecuado en nuestra región de un tema que no sólo representa un ideal de unavida buena, sino que también se constituye en un derecho fundamental con amplias repercusiones en lapromoción de la salud, el bienestar y la creatividad, entre otros muchos aspectos, incluido el de servir deguía para el disfrute de una creciente oferta de entretenimiento digital e innovación disruptiva.

  Are the terms leisure, idleness, and recreation equivalent? This article tries to answer this question. An added aim is to contribute to a more active participation of Latin America in the global discussion. This region can use its human capital and cultural heritage to help configure leisure as a personal experience and a social phenomenon. Leisure as a concept has varied significantly along different historical periods. But the acquired, prolonged confusion between the terms leisure, idleness, and recreation has precluded from and adequate assessment in the Latin American region of an issue that, not only refers to a good life, but that is also a fundamental right pertaining to the promotion of health, wellbeing, and creativity, among many others aspects, including serving as a guide for the enjoyment of an increasing supply of digital entertainment and disruptive innovation.
