    A recepção da obra de Hans Mor‑ genthau no contexto acadêmico‑ -institucional norte-americano, como um típico representante da escola da «política de poder», acabou por detur‑ par e simplificar sua teoria realista das relações internacionais. A partir de um olhar que leva em conta outras influên‑ cias intelectuais, o artigo analisa a riqueza da contribuição teórica do autor e seu diálogo com algumas ela‑ borações contemporâneas. O trabalho destaca algumas delas: a concepção pluralista do «homem político»; a ela‑ boração de uma teoria da política que tanto pode ser pensada para o âmbito interno quanto o externo; a antecipa‑ ção do conceito de anarquia interna‑ cional; o entendimento do poder como relação social, incluindo as dimensões material e simbólica. Ao final, o artigo examina a contribuição de Morgenthau na análise da política externa de países sem poder, ressaltando os temas da política de prestígio, as capacidades diplomáticas e o soft power.

    The reception of Hans Morgenthau’s work in a north American acade‑ mic-institutional context, as a typical representative of the “power politics” school, turned out to misrepresent and simplify his realist theory of the inte‑ ractional relations. From a perspective that takes into account other intellec‑ tual influences, the article looks at the wealth of the author’s theoretical con‑ tribution and its dialogue with some contemporary approaches, highli‑ ghting some of them: the pluralist conception of the “political man”; the development of a theory of politics which can be thought both for a domestic and an international scope;

    the anticipation of a concept of inter‑ national anarchy; and the understan‑ ding of power as social relationship, including material and symbolic dimensions. Finally, the article explo‑ res Morgenthau’s contribution to an analysis of powerless countries’ foreign policy, exploring themes of political prestige, diplomatic capaci‑ ties and soft power.
