O presente artigo tem como objectivo percorrer a primeira edição de Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace, trabalho seminal de Hans J. Morgenthau, com um duplo propósito. Por um lado, assinalar os principais aspectos e salientar os objectivos que trouxe para a evolução da própria disciplina das relações internacionais, já que é devidamente reconhecida como um trabalho semi‑ nal da teoria realista; e, por outro lado, procurar enquadrar historicamente a obra no seu tempo, dando ênfase às contribuições que ela trouxe em face do princípio da competição bipolar entre os Estados Unidos e a União das Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas.

This article aims to cover the first edition of Politics among Nations:
The Struggle for Power and Peace, seminal work by Hans Morgenthau, with a dual purpose. On the one hand, to point out the main aspects and to highlight the objectives that it brought to the evolu‑ tion of the discipline of International Relations; and, on the other hand, to seek to historically frame this work in its time, emphasizing the contribu‑ tions it brought to the understanding of the bipolar competition between the United States and the Soviet Union.
