Resumen de Ilegitimidad, alcoholismo y tuberculosis: Explicaciones médicas de la mortalidad infantil. Santiago de Chile (1870-1912)

Este artículo analiza los planteamientos de los especialistas médicos dedicados a la infancia, entre la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del siglo XX. A través de publicaciones en prensa y memorias de titulación indaga en las explicaciones de las causas de la mortalidad infantil en relación a un acervo de elementos del ámbito científico y a una amplia gama de juicios morales, entre ellos la ilegitimidad del nacimiento, el alcoholismo y la tuberculosis. Tras este análisis, se concluye que hasta la organización de la medicina pediátrica y la promulgación de la Ley de la Infancia Desvalida, fueron adoptadas una serie de argumentaciones relacionadas con la cultura de la época más que en los tratamientos de las enfermedades para tratar de reducir uno de los índices más elevados a nivel mundial.

This article analyzes the approaches of medical specialists dedicated to childhood, between the second half of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century. Through publications in the press and titling reports, he explores the explanations of the causes of infant mortality in relation to a collection of scientific elements and a wide range of moral judgments, including the illegitimacy of birth, alcoholism and tuberculosis. After this analysis, it is concluded that up to the organization of pediatric medicine and the promulgation of the Law of the Children Invalid, they were adopted a series of arguments related to the culture of the time more than in the treatments of the diseases to try to reduce one of the highest rates worldwide.
