    Hace cien años murió el naturalista y forjador de la biología contemporánea, Alfred Russel Wallace. Junto con Darwin, descubrió la selección natural y se le considera el “padre” de la biogeografía. Wallace fue el preeminente biólogo tropical de su tiempo. Hizo contribuciones importantes a la teoría de la evolución, y además a la geología y la antropología. También hizo grandes aportes a la ornitología mediante artículos sobre aves, recolección de pieles y captura viva de una especie de ave del paraíso. Hombre de múltiples intereses, estudió y se pronunció sobre muchos asuntos de la vida victoriana, y se comprometió con causas en pro de la justicia social.

    A hundred years ago the great naturalist and forger of contemporary biology, Alfred Russel Wallace, died. Together with Darwin, he is the discoverer of natural selection and is also considered the “father” of biogeography. Wallace was the preeminent tropical biologist of his time and made important contributions to the theory of evolution, as well as to geology and anthropology. He also enriched ornithology through articles about birds, the collection of specimens, and the capture of a live bird of paradise. A man of many interests, he studied and made pronouncements about many matters of Victorian life and committed himself to causes in favor of social justice.
