    Las figuras de Frank Ryan y Eamon O'Duffy se nos antojan como dos polos opuestos del voluntariado irlandés pero, a la vez, podrían entenderse como los referentes que mejor ilustran la Irlanda polarizada que surgió tras la independencia y la guerra civil en aquel país. Dos figuras enfrentadas que encarnaban dos visiones diferentes sobre la guerra civil española. Los dos creían tener principios sólidos por los que estaban dispuestos a sacrificar, incluso, sus propias vidas si llegaba el caso. Ninguno imaginaba que estaba siendo utilizado o manipulado. La fe en la causa en la que creían era muy superior a cualquier otro interés personal de ahí que ambos, en su fuero interno, elevaran aquel conflicto a la categoría de cruzada.

    Frank Ryan and Eamon O'Duffy could be considered two opposite poles of the Irish voluntary units in Spain yet, at the same time, they may be seen as the references which best illustrate the divided lreland that emerged after che partition and the civil war. Two opposing figures who incarnated two different visions of the Spanish Civil War. Both were convinced that they had principies so/id enough ro warrant their sacrificing their own lives if need be. Neither imagined that he was being used or manipulated. Their faith in che cause in which they believed was far greater than any personal interese and thus for both, in their hearts, that conflict reached the status of a crusade.
