    ¿Quiénes eran de verdad los norteamericanos de las Brigadas Internacionales? ¿El héroe Robert Jordan, creado por Ernest Hemingway en "Por quién doblan las campanas", es un voluntario típico? Este artículo tiene dos objetivos. En primer lugar presentar brevemente la figura de Hemingway, su relación con los brigadistas y la polémica causada por su novela entre las filas de los excombatientes. En segundo lugar, trazar una descripción de los brigadistas norteamericanos basada en la verdad histórica, lejos de los estereotipos románticos creados en aquel momento y que desgraciadamente perduran en la actualidad.

    Who really were the American in the International Brigades? Is Hemingway's hero, Roberto Jordan a typical volunteer? The objetive of this article is twofold: firstly to present briefly Hemingway, his relationship with the Lincoln brigadiers and the polemic description of the typical American volunteers based upon historical fact, far from the romantic stereotypes which originated long ago and which, unfortunately, are still alive today.
