    La Guerra Civil española fue un símbolo histórico con una enorme repercusión sobre la creación literaria a nivel internacional. La novela de Hugh MacLennan The Watch That Ends the Night (1959), a través de su marco histórico relacionado con el conflicto español, abre el debate de la memoria histórica desde la perspectiva canadiense. La representación literaria de Hugh MacLennan junto con la información detallada de los documentos de y sobre los miembros del batallón Mackenzie-Papienau y las reconstrucciones historiográficas sobre su participación en la contienda española resultan fundamentales en la labor de reconstrucción de la representación histórica ofrecida por parte de la historiografía oficial. Igualmente, sus textos ayudan a inter-conectar la memoria histórica y literaria sobre la participación canadiense en la Guerra Civil española como símbolos de que "both history and literature ... make meaning of the past" (Wyile 2002: 21).

    The Spanish Civil War was a historical symbol with great impact over the literary imagination in a worldwide scale. Hugh MacLennan's novel The Watch That Ends the Night (1959) questions the topic of historical memory through its historical setting connetred with the Spanish armed conflict. MacLennan's lirerary represenracion, rogether with MacPaps' autobiographical documents and the historiographic reconstrucrions about the Canadian participation in this conflict are crucial in reconfiguring its official historical representation. Likewise, these texts inter-connect the historical and literary memories of the Canadian participation in the Spanish Civil War as symbols of the fact that "both history and literature... make meaning of the past" (Wyile 2002: 21).
