Lista Oficial de las Aves de Costa Rica: Actualización 2012

    Describimos los cambios para el período 2011-2012 en la Lista Oficial de las Aves de Costa Rica y la Isla del Coco, cumpliendo de esta manera el Décimo Aniversario de actualizar y publicar la lista de aves más actualizada y completa del país, la cual registra a la fecha un total de 897 especies reconocidas como Oficiales. Durante este proceso de actualización recibimos y analizamos la cifra record de 21 formularios y 142 fotografías; paralelamente realizamos revisiones de especímenes en colecciones de museos en Costa Rica y en los Estados Unidos de Norte América. Incluimos en esta actualización: a) nueve nuevos registros para Costa Rica: Aythya valisineria canvasback, Aythya americana redhead, Lophodytes cucullatus hooded merganser, Puffinus gravis great shearwater, Puffinus puffinus Manx shearwater, Puffinus subalaris Galapagos shearwater, Phaethon lepturus white-tailed tropicbird, Phaethon rubricauda red-tailed tropicbird, Buteo plagiatusgray hawk; b) siete cambios de categoría, de Oficial-Sin comprobante a Oficial-Con comprobante: Oceanodroma markhami Markham’s storm-petrel, Rallus longirostris clapper rail, Leucophaeus modestus gray gull, Antrostomus (Caprimulgus) rufus rufous nightjar, Falco femoralis aplomado falcon, Tyrannus verticalis western kingbird y Progne tapera brown-chested martin; c) dos actualizaciones de comprobante Oficial: Puffinus lherminieri Audubon’s shearwater y Botaurus lentiginosus American bittern; d) doce nuevas especies se incluyen en la lista de la Isla del Coco; e) incluimos por primera vez en diez años los nombres en español y comunes para todas las especies y ponemos a disposición de todos los lectores un formulario que nos ayude a documentar los nombres comunes de las aves que se utilizan en todo el territorio nacional; f) hacemos la corrección del nombre en inglés de Pyrrhura hoffmanni sulphurwinged parakeet, el cual estaba mal escrito como sulfur-winged parakeet desde la primera edición de la Lista Oficial de las Aves de Costa Rica 2002 y subsiguientes versiones hasta el año 2011. Finalmente en esta edición 2012, resaltamos nuevamente la revisión del estatus taxonómico, nombres científicos y nombres en inglés de todas las especies incluidas en la lista, según la actualización más reciente de la American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU); hacemos un llamado a ornitólogos y observadores de aves a prestar atención a estos cambios ya que modifican sustancialmente las listas anteriores.

    We decribe changes for the 2011-2012 period to Official List of the Birds of Costa Rica and the Cocos Island, thus fulfilling the tenth anniversary of updating and publishing the most accurate and complete list for the country. To date the list contains a total of 897 species recogonized as official. During the updating process we received and analyzed a record of 21 forms and 142 photographs; at the same time we reviewed the specimen collections of museums in Costa Rica and the United States of America. We include in this update: a) nine new registers for Costa Rica: Aythya valisineria canvasback, Aythya americana redhead, Lophodytes cucullatus hooded merganser, Puffinus gravis great shearwater, Puffinus puffinus Manx shearwater, Puffinus subalaris Galapagos shearwater, Phaethon lepturus white-tailed tropicbird, Phaethon rubricauda red-tailed tropicbird, Buteo plagiatus gray hawk; b) seven changes in the category of Official Without Voucher to Official With Voucher: Oceanodroma markhami Markham’s storm-petrel, Rallus longirostris clapper rail, Leucophaeus modestus gray gull, Antrostomus (Caprimulgus) rufus rufous nightjar, Falco femoralis aplomado falcon, Tyrannus verticalis western kingbird and Progne tapera brown-chested martin; c) two up dates of Official: Puffinus lherminieri Audubon’s shearwater and Botaurus lentiginosus American bittern; d)twelve new species are included in the list for the Cocos Island; e) we include for the first time in ten years Spanish and common names for all species and we put at the disposition of readers a form that helps us to document the common names of birds that are used in the national territory; f) we correct the English name of Pyrrhura hoffmanni sulphur-winged parakeet, which was misspelled as sulfur-winged parakeet in the first edition of the Official List of the Birds of Costa Rica 2002 and subsecuent versions through 2011. Finally in this 2012 edition, we again lift up the review of taxonomic status, sientific names and names in English of all species included in the list, according to the most recent update by the American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU); we call on ornithologists and birdwatcrs to pay close attention to these changes since they substantially modify the previous lists.
