Pregnancy is a period of time in the life of women in which self-care, prevention and health promotion acquire greater presence. Physical exercise during pregnancy should be an essential part of this stage, but currently there is no consensus on the impact of this practice, both on the expectant mother as on the fetus and newborn. The literature review is to identify the benefits of regular maternal physical exercise on fetal and newborn health. As found in the literature, there is a direct relationship between maternal physical exercise and the impact on fetal and newborn, being beneficial practice during pregnancy. It seems advisable to the development of future research focused on establishing the benefits of maternal physical exercise on the fetus and neonate as well as the impact in later stages; similarly, recommendations for practice safely depending on the individual characteristics and needs of each expectant mother.
