    En aquest article s’avalua la idoneïtat per analitzar traduccions de cançons del principi Pentatló, definit per Peter Low per a textos operístics de la tradició de música clàssica europea. Aquestes traduccions, destinades a la interpretació en escena, impliquen un gran nombre de limitacions que modelen la tasca de traducció i les característiques que ha de presentar la versió produïda. La metodologia duta a terme per efectuar aquesta demostració es basa en l’aplicació de cadascun dels cinc paràmetres integrants del principi Pentatló (significat, naturalitat, ritme, rima i cantabilitat). Després de definir cada principi, cosa que ens permet arribar a un terreny comú sobre com aplicar i utilitzar cada paràmetre, s’analitza un exemple.

    El propòsit fonamental d’aquest estudi és, donat un mètode d’anàlisi útil per a un gènere determinat, comprovar la possibilitat de generalitzar-lo a altres gèneres com els adscrits a la música o arts escèniques de l’esfera anomenada popular. Els resultats de l’anàlisi permetran afirmar que el mètode, mitjançant algun canvi en la definició i ponderació dels paràmetres, es pot aplicar al gènere tractat: les cançons populars i folklòriques. Per tant, es podrà validar aquest mètode per a més gèneres i contribuir d’aquesta manera a sistematitzar el camp d’estudi.

    This article evaluates the suitability of Peter Low’s Pentathlon Principle to analyse the translation of songs. This principle was initially devised for operatic texts belonging to the European classical music tradition. These translations, intended for on-stage performance, convey a great number of restrictions which condition the translation task and the features that have to be included in the version produced. The methodology used to accomplish this demonstration is based on the application of the five parameters which make up the Pentathlon principle (meaning, naturalness, rhythm, rhyme and singability). After providing a proper definition of each parameter in order to reach common ground on the application of the principle, the article then analyses an example.

    Given that the method useful for analysing a particular genre such as the opera, the main purpose of this study is to test if it can be applied to other genres such as popular music and the performing arts. The results of the analysis confirm that the method, after minor changes in the definition and weighting of the parameters, is suitable for application to the intended genre of folkloric and popular songs. The method will thus be validated for a larger number of genres, which in turn will contribute to the systematization of this field of study.
