    Eran unas elecciones históricas, las primeras en Pakistán de las que salía un gobierno civil al que ha dado el relevo otro gobierno civil tras haber agotado su mandato, sin interferencias militares. Además, hubo más participación que hace cinco años. Los paquistaníes desafiaron las amenazas de los talibanes y acudieron de forma masiva a las urnas. El nuevo primer ministro es un viejo conocido en la política paquistaní: Nawaz Sharif, líder de la PMLN (Liga Musulmana de Pakistán), fue ya jefe de gobierno en dos ocasiones en los años 90 del pasado siglo. La cantada debacle del Partido Popular de Pakistán, de la fallecida Benazir Bhutto, se consumó. Y el efecto Imran Khan, el ex jugador de criquet que lidera el PTI (Movimiento para la Justicia), pasó de anunciarse como un tsunami a convertirse en una simple ola que, sin embargo, habrá que observar atentamente en Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, provincia en la que su partido ganó y gobierna. Con una cómoda mayoría, muchos esperan que Sharif pueda evitar la caída de Pakistán y haga frente a los grandes desafíos que han colocado a su país al borde del abismo.

    These were historical elections, the first in Pakistan where a civil government passes to another civil government after completing a full term, without military interferences. There has been also much more participation than five years ago. The Pakistani have challenged the threats of the Taliban and went massively to the polls. The new prime minister is an old known of the Pakistani policy: Nawaz Sharif, leader of the PLMN (Muslim League of Pakistan) was already chief of government twice in the nineties. The awaited debacle of the Popular Party of Pakistan, of the dead Benazir Bhutto, was consummated. And the effect Imran Khan, the former criket player who leads the PTI, was converted from a tsunami to a little wave that, nevertheless, should be paid attention in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa where his party won. With a comfortable majority, people hope that Sharif could avoid the fall in the abyss and confront the big challenges that has put his country on the brink.
