    El término "ecología" remite al ecosistema del planeta, es decir, a una visión moderna de nuestro ambiente, una aproximación que presupone el concepto de limitación de los recursos terrestres. Estamos lejos de la visión medieval del mundo temporal. Sin embargo, Francisco ha sido declarado patrono de la ecología y considerado también protector de los animales. Hay que preguntarse el porqué de tal elección y discutir la cuestión del anacronismo, pero quizá, y sobre todo, entender cómo actúa hoy un pensamiento, una actitud franciscana, en la sociedad contemporánea respecto al ambiente. La radicalidad franciscana se inscribe quizá en la tensión entre ética y estética, motivo por el cual defendemos que la actualidad de San Francisco encuentra un éxito expresivo en las artes contemporáneas. Presentamos una reflexión sobre algunas creaciones artísticas - M. Pistoletto, G. Penone, G. Clément, A. Burri, G. Meneguzzi y V, Sponga, G. Mauri, M. Frammartino - que afrontan los desafíos ecológicos a través de la memoria viva de la proeza de San Francisco.

    The term "ecology" refers back to the ecosystem of the planet, namely to a modern view of our environment, an approach that presupposes a concrete understanding of the finitude of earthly resources. This discourse is far from the mediaeval conception of the temporal order. Yet Francis has been declared the Patron Saint of Ecology and is likewise considered to be the protector of the animals. There might be a need to look more closely at the reasons for this choice of Francis as the Patron Saint of Ecology, and to discuss the anachronism involved, but most of all ir is necessary to understand how a Franciscan attitude to the environment would influence society today. The radical nature of Franciscan thought belongs perhaps in the tension between ethics ans aesthetics, and it is for this reason that we propose to see the relevance of Saint Francis as finding expression in contemporary arts. We reflect on works created by certain artists - M. Pistoletto, G. Penone, G. Clément, A. Burri, G, Meneguzzi and V. Sponga, G. Mauri, M. Frammartino - which confront the ecological challenges through the living memory of the deeds of Saint Francis.
